Programme notes:
SRING SUITE (for String Quartet) explores the evolution of the season between winter and summer. The lingering harsh elements of winter commence the suite with its four-note cluster. The first signs of spring soon follow in the modally based first movement, Awaken. The second movement, Bloom, expresses the re-birth of nature with a tender yearning. Finally, flora and fauna are musically alive and well in the third and final movement, Frolic.
Premiered by the Toronto-based Odin Quartet, Brandon wrote the first four musical notes of the suite as a cipher to represent the letters of the quartet’s name: “O-D-I-N”!
