More about the 2019 Steel City Jazz Festival discussed in the radio interview with Brandon Walker:

2019 Steel City Jazz Festival

  • The Steel City Jazz Festival was founded by Chris Ferguson and Emily Milko after returning from a trip to the 2012 Detroit Jazz Festival. Maybe it was the result of riding high after seeing both Wayne Shorter and Sonny Rollins perform in one weekend, but Chris and Emily decided to give throwing a jazz festival a try. Preparations started right away and on August 22nd, 2013 the first annual Steel City Jazz Festival began.
  • Simon Wheeldon is acting as Director this year and is continuing the great work Chris Ferguson begun with the Festival. Chris is still involved, but is taking a small step back as he and his wife Emily are enjoying their newborn son. Congratulations!
  • There were 8 concerts over the 5 festival days at 3 venues in Hamilton, Ontario: The Artword Artbar, The Corktown Pub, and The Pearl Company.
  • The Featured Artist this year is Smordin Law Artist in Residence, trumpeter Jason Logue.
  • Other artist in the festival included: the Paul Benton Trio, Nick Maclean Quartet ft: Brownman Ali, Blunt Objects (featuring the music of Carla Bley), Waleed Kush African Jazz Ensemble, The Jazz Connection Big Band, and the ECJ Quintet, led by bassist Evelyn Carter Joe featuring Mohawk grads and faculty.
