6th Annual International Composition Competition Finals at the Palladium Theater
Sun – Feb 26, 2023 – 2:00pm EST
The Tampa Bay Symphony is to perform music by Brandon Walker. Brandon is a finalist in the Tampa Bay Symphony’s 6th Annual Composition Contest. This year’s contest theme is related to the situation in Ukraine. Brandon is honored to be one of three composers chosen from the 49 entries from 17 different countries!
Brandon’s piece for orchestra, Incandescence (Ukraine’s Undying Light), was inspired by the undying light and energy radiating from the Ukrainian people. Filled with tensions and ambiguous feelings, the piece builds to a conflict with militaristic trumpet calls at its climax. Yet, the yearning to end this horror and return to peace echoes the theme of freedom and final notes.
The performance on February 26th is open to the public and is free. Tickets can be found here.
At the concert’s end, the orchestra players will vote for the winning piece, which will be performed in the Tampa Bay Symphony’s Spring Series. The winning piece also receives a $1,000 prize. (If chosen, Brandon will donate to a charity associated with the Ukrainian conflict).
Other finalist pieces to be performed at the concert include:
- Through Shattering Snow and Fallen Glass, by Jeffrey Fong (Canada)
- Defiant Overture, by Austin Ali (US)
