Brandon Walker’s original composition for SATB choir and solo cello, “The Last Hope”, portrays an epic journey across the Universe.
Inspired by a vocal performance of Samuel Barber’s Agnus Dei (his own arrangement of his Adagio for Strings), I wrote this sad, yet hopeful piece using SATB choir + solo cello.
I’m not aware of any other arrangement for choir and cello, however I found the combination to be quite fitting. When I was composing this piece, I imagined the sound of the somber and lyrical cello at odds with the hopeful and spiritual choir. While I was trying to write something “sad” for the Professional Composer’s Forum contest (August 2020), the piece definitely had a flair of hope. It was this concept that led to the video and storyline.
